Welcome Jim Stroud! Job-Hunt’s Job Search Technology Expert

This week, we are very pleased to welcome author, official “searchologist,” and award-winning blogger Jim Stroud to the roster of accomplished job search and career professionals contributing their expert advice to help Job-Hunt’s visitors.

Jim Stroud is Job-Hunt’s Job Search Technology Expert, with the accent on “search”!

Based on his experience with the recruiting world and his in-depth understanding of search technology, particularly Google, Jim will help job seekers learn how to leverage search – and other – technologies to find new ways to use Internet technologies for their job search.

In his career, Jim served as a Technical Sourcing Consultant and was a regular contributor to Microsoft’s Technical Careers Blog while employed at Microsoft.

So far, Jim Stroud has created and sold three online properties including the award-winning blog The Recruiters Lounge, to which he still contributes.

Jim produces TheSearchologist website  where he helps recruiters learn the latest resume sourcing techniques and lead generation strategies via articles, a video series, and a print publication.  He also co-hosts the technology podcast, Friday Traffic Report, is co-founder of The Hidden Job Report, and Tweets as, naturally, @JimStroud.

This week, we are very pleased to welcome author, syndicated columnist, and former HR executive Nan S. Russell, to the roster of accomplished job search and career professionals contributing their expert advice to help Job-Hunt’s visitors.

Transitioning Military: How to Leverage Your LinkedIn Profile for Your Civilian Job

Recently, I’ve seen transitioning military members using LinkedIn for their job search, as much as a year in advance of their separation. I’m very happy to see LinkedIn participation increasing for transitioning military because LinkedIn is extremely important to 21st century job search, even if you aren’t planning to separate for 5 years.  And starting a year in advance (even a few days in advance) is an excellent idea!

However, I have seen some mistakes that are making the job search process last much longer than it needs to last.  But these mistakes are not difficult to fix, and the payoff is huge.

Employer Benefits of Employee LinkedIn Participation

Employers - AND Employees – Benefit from Employee LinkedIn Participation

It may be a surprise to some, but LinkedIn isn’t useful only for job search and recruiting.  Active participation is good for your career and good for your employer as well.

NOTE:  Before you join LinkedIn, or, in fact, participate in any social media, be sure to check for an official policy from your employer about employee use of social media. Some employers ban social media use by employees, at least while the employees are at work. Some don’t want any mention of the employer at all, while others think social media is great and encourage employee participation. So, it’s best to check for a policy and/or guidelines to be sure.

In fact, your employer may benefit from your active participation in LinkedIn. Even if you are the only employee who is a LinkedIn member, your participation puts your employer “on the map” (virtually) as an organization.
