Thanks for the kind words, Gayle! This lesson is one I learned from painful personal experience. Maybe that's the only way to learn, but I hope not!

Susan, your advice to the jobseeker is smart and spot on. I've known hundreds of jobseekers over the years who, from a few lines in an advertisement pin a lifetime of hopes and dreams on a job. Illogically, they fail to look at any of the issues such as you have mentioned. Instead, of primary interest is the need to be wanted in return! Unsurprisingly a good portion of these people end up disillusioned and back for a resume update in mere months as the job or the employer was not what they had envisaged in this rainbow world. While an interview and job hunt can be a wildly exciting time, it's is also a time to step back logically and intelligently and review what is being said, what is being offered, what you want and what they offer. As you say, it's a two way street, not just a company validating your existence! As always terrific column.

Susan:
I liked the way you pointed out things to evaluate/consider. We sometimes overlook those details, that in the long run, make a big difference.
I whole-heartedly agree that the interview is a two way street! Thanks for covering this angle!
