Finding the Best Employers

While you are organizing your job search and career planning, consider these companies which have been selected for inclusion based on their size (Large General Company Lists) or based on some criteria as  “best employers” or “top companies” (“Best” or “Top” Companies Lists).

These employers may or may not be the best place for you to work, but the lists are good starting points and food for thought, hopefully introducing you to employers you had never considered before. (more…)

Thousands of New Resources Added to Job-Hunt!

This month (May, 2010), we’ve added 3 new collections of links to Job-Hunt that add up to more than 1,000 new links, so we’ve leaped over the 15,000 links mark!

The new sections added , so far, in May are:

1.  The 2010 FORTUNE 500 companies, ranked in order, including for each -

  • Link to the FORTUNE “snapshot” with the current financial data
  • Link to the company Website
  • Link to the recruiting section of the company Website

    Note: this section was expanded in December, 2010, to include the whole FORTUNE 1000 with links to the internship postings, too, if included.

2.  Professional associations and societies for consultants and the consulting industry, including for each:

  • Link to the organization’s home page
  • Link to public job postings section of the site, if any
  • Indication if job postings are available only for members
  • List of other sections of the organization’s Website that could be useful for job seekers, like a member directory, event calendar, local chapters, newsletters, etc.

3.  Professional associations and societies for people working in retail and the retail industry, including for each:

  • Link to the organization’s home page
  • Link to public job postings section of the site, if any
  • Indication if job postings are available only for members

Preparing for Career Success Starts with Interviewing the Employers

A recent study by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania showed that companies with high rates of employee satisfaction financially out-performed companies with lower employee satisfaction.

NOTE: That’s employee satisfaction, not customer satisfaction, which resulted in higher financial performance!

The connection with customer satisfaction is obvious – presumably, happy employees translate into happy customers.  Otherwise the financial performance would not be influenced.

So What?

How does knowing this help a job seeker to prepare for career success?

To perform at their best, job seekers need to be satisfied with their workplace and colleagues, regardless of the job.  Performing at their best usually, although not always, helps insure longevity with that employer, acceptable pay, and good health.

Jobs and Internships

An internship can be a great way to “test drive” a job before you make the leap into that career.

It could have helped me enormously as I was finishing college.  During my last semester of college, student teaching showed me that my chosen field – education – was NOT a good career fit – a painful personal experience which came way too late in my education.   So, I implemented a quick change of career direction, and joined the United States Marine Corps.  Perhaps not everyone’s first career choice, but it worked for me at the time, and I’m glad I did it.  Semper Fi to all Marines!

These days, people in many different stages of their careers and lives look to internships to provide insight and experience, as well as the proverbial foot-in-the-door plus a boost to their  personal networks. (more…)
