This list is almost as interesting for who’s NOT on it at this point. We have Burger King, but not McDonald’s. We have PepsiCo, but only in the UK, and Coca-Cola not at all. We have Microsoft (sort of) and MySpace and Twitter, but not Oracle, Sybase, Adobe, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. We have IBM but not Dell or HP. We have two accounts from MTV and one for Warner Brothers but nothing for Disney, Pixar, or any of the other studios. Intel and EMC are the only manufacturers that made the list.

None of the big pharmaceutical companies are on this list either because I couldn’t find any of them, and, even though Best Buy has thousands of jobs posted on its Website (here), they are using Twitter only for marketing, so far. No other large retailer showed up, either.
You’ll find the U.S. Department of State is the only branch of the U.S. Federal Government or ANY U.S.A. government entity, that is recruiting on Twitter. I very recently discovered that the city of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, also recruits using Twitter. Interesting…
Researching this list reminded me of slogging through the Fortune 500 ten years ago, looking for the large employers that were smart enough to (1) have a corporate Website with “current” content and (2) use their corporate Website for recruiting (and not hiding the job listings). If I remember correctly, in 1999, only about 10% of them did that. Closer to 95% do it now. Wonder how long it will take the majority of them to adapt to Twitter for recruiting…
Food for Thought
Part of this (present vs. missing employers) is “the economy” of course, but not all of it. Look to these employers, below, to find management that pays attention to what’s going on in the marketplace and that is smart enough to stake out their claim to the appropriate technological footprint.
The List – The Best and the Brightest?
Many companies have customer service and marketing accounts, but use for recruiting is just beginning and will probably pick up as the economy improves and Twitter becomes more popular. More Twitter accounts will be integrated into Job-Hunt’s vast collection of resources as employers use them more.

Although the US firm may not be using it Deloitte Australia is using Twitter for recruitment purposes. Check out http://twitter.com/Green_Dot. We’ve also developed a Facebook application called Join me @ Deloitte I don’t think any of the other Accounting “behemoths” have developed their own FB application!

Just checking in to see why DaVita didn’t make the list. Checked out a few of the companies on the list which we are ahead of in terms of size, and our twitter following for our job postings is quite a bit larger than theirs. Wasn’t sure if the Healthcare industry was skipped by chance. Interesting list. A few distinctions I’d like to make.
Numer one: “recruiting” via twitter is not limited to simply pushing jobs out. Good to start there, but please, I beg you, don’t stop there. Social media in general is not just another distribution channel.
I work in staffing at Best Buy and can tell you we use twitter all the time to recruit, not always via pushing job content. I’m going to be speaking on this very subject at Google on Monday for this http://socialrecruitingsummit.com. Feel free to follow the stream of the presentation there.
Second: If you look at Best Buy’s twitter handle closely (http://twitter.com/bestbuy) you’ll notice that its not just one person pushing info out from PR, its actually a bunch of Best Buy employees who are posting through the @bestbuy twitter handle. We do this by using http://Connecttweet.com, written by a Best Buy .com guy, http://twitter.com/benhedrington. Connecttweet allows multiple individuals to post through a shared Twitter account. All that’s required is for them to sign up, and be approved by the admin. Its pretty unusual that a large company would allow any employee to represent the company brand in this way. Also, I personally post jobs through this channel, along with other relevant stuff for employment branding. It just doesn’t have ‘jobs’ or ‘careers’ or ‘recruiting’ anywhere in the reference. This is intentional. The employment/employee brand is the brand.
There are endless ways you can use twitter for recruiting, as a job distribution channel is only one, and somewhat myopic use for it. If you are reading this, please don’t stop there, you’ll be missing out on an incredible opportunity to connect with your potential future employees in ways exponentially more powerful than pushing a job posting at them.
