Employment Tests Evaluated

In today’s world, many companies use employment tests in order to evaluate potential candidates.

Depending on the type of job you’re applying for, you might be asked to submit to a technical test, a physical test or even a drug test. All of these tests help businesses evaluate potential employees in one way or another.

While most companies administer employment tests after a candidate has been interviewed, some companies will start out with an employment test right off the bat. According to an article by The Seattle Times Company, the latter type of employer often view tests as a substitute for careful interviewing and assessment by a hiring manager.

If you feel like you’re dealing with that type of employer and fear you might be rejected before even meeting with a human, there are a few things steps you can take. First of all, if an employer asks you to meet with the human resources office, tell them that your time is limited and you’d rather meet with the hiring manager first. That way you’re guaranteed to find out whether or not you’re a potential match for the company.

Then you should ask if the company requires you to submit to any sort of test before meeting with the hiring manager. If so, ask that you be interviewed by the hiring manager before taking the test. That way if the interview doesn’t go well, you won’t waste any time on an unnecessary test.

If a company refuses to offer you an interview before you take a test, it’s up to you to decide how badly you want that specific position. However, keep in mind that if a company isn’t willing to compromise with you from the get-go, they’re probably not going to be willing to compromise with you later.

And while some companies might think it bold or some candidates might not feel comfortable asking these things, it’s important to have some leniency if you’re going to sacrifice your time to check out a potential job, especially if you’re taking time away from a current position.
