Hey, HR, Start Being Nicer!

CAREEREALISM just published a very interesting blog post, explaining to job seekers “Why HR’s Just Not  That Into You“  Interesting article!  However…

Having worked in HR myself, pre-Internet, I can understand how people in HR feel, at least to a certain degree.  However, I’m not letting HR off the hook for 2 reasons, both of which are really in the self-interest of every employer to consider:

1.)  Today, it’s very easy to use technology to manage many of the problems that technology creates.

Like using an autoresponder. It automatically sends out email in response to an action:

*  Receive a resume or application, triger an autoreply that thanks the person for their interest and acknowledges receipt. (more…)

If you’ve just started job searching or are considering switching career paths, it’s important to revamp your resume to include any and all work experience you may have. It’s not necessary to hire a professional to keep your resume up to date, as resume writing is a skill every qualified worker should have.

Here are some tips from Tampabay.com to help you keep your resume in top shape:

  • Do a “mind dump” of things you’ve done at work and how you did them, suggests Daisy Sawn, a Los Angeles career coach. Write down everything you can think of, even if it seems insignificant. This will help you focus on your skills and pinpoint what you should include in your resume.

    Nevada Jobs Paint Gold Picture for One City

    Among the bleak national and local economic picture, one town is holding its own and becoming a haven for Nevada jobs.

    Elko, Nevada – a city of 50,000 people – is historically known for its rural atmosphere and gold production. While the area might not seem like an exciting place to live, the town’s gold-mining operations are adding jobs and helping to spread wealth throughout Elko County. In the meantime, more popular spots like Las Vegas and Reno are suffering from real estate blows and the overall recession.

    Elko currently employs 26,700 workers, up from 25,500 workers last year. Most other towns, and the State of Nevada as a whole, have continued to lose jobs. Even the construction industry, which is one of the hardest hit by the recession, has seen an increase in employment in Elko, as have taxable sales.

    Jobs to Stay Closer to Home

    United States companies are lately feeling more and more pressure to help save jobs.

    One way some companies are doing this it by manufacturing products in the United States instead of turning to low-cost options like China. A recent survey by AMR Research found that 10 percent of U.S.-based manufacturers consider political pressure a primary reason to manufacture in the country, an increase of 4 percent since November 2008.

    According to an article by Reuters, part of that shift can be attributed to the recent passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which comes with the stipulation of saving or creating jobs in America.
