Job Search Should Focus on More than Internet

January 29th, 2009 by Joel

It’s no surprise that the job search is a lot harder now because of the declining economy.

Many experienced workers are finding themselves spending countless hours searching for jobs, in most cases to no avail. As more and more companies continue to lay off workers, the job pool decreases and the number of unemployed workers increases.

One downfall, according to an article by Examiner, is that many job seekers rely solely on the Internet to find jobs. Using online job search tactics only can considerably limit your options. One study found that an average of 300 job seekers apply to an online job posting, meaning when you apply to a job online, you could be competing with 299 other people for the same position.

Many Opportunites with the U S Census Bureau

January 24th, 2009 by Susan P. Joyce

The US Census Bureau has an enormous task and a rock-solid deadline, defined by US law: they must count every person in the USA by the end of 2010.

So, they are eagerly looking for help across the country, in every location, speaking every local language.

The jobs are temporary through the end of 2010, both full-time and part-time, paying a respectable hourly rate for the location.  You may find “permanent” jobs with other employers that don’t last as long.

Recruiting for Reno Construction Jobs

January 20th, 2009 by Joel

The State of Nevada may soon be recruiting several new construction workers for projects that will create Reno jobs.

The Reno-Sparks area is waiting on the fate of a voter-approved advisory question making its way through the state Legislature. If approved, the advisory would help jump start several road construction projects in the area, according to an article by the Nevada Appeal.

Current construction workers in Reno and those looking for construction work in the area find this welcome news, as the state government has put many major projects on hold because of the economy. If the advisory measure is approved, Washoe County‘s gas tax would be adjusted to count in the costs of building streets and highways.

Job Search with Your Own Blog

January 16th, 2009 by Susan P. Joyce

Robert Scoble, aka “scobleizer,” has written an excellent article on how someone who’s been laid off should leverage social networking.  Scoble strongly recommends that every laid off or unemployed job seeker establish a blog.  Of course, being a blogger is how Scoble became scobleizer, and, given what he’s accomplished blogging, he’s probably right.

Blogs are not that hard to create, but they are harder to keep “alive.”

So, how do you become a blogger?

The FBI Help Wanted List – Nearly 3,000 Jobs

January 7th, 2009 by Susan P. Joyce

According to FBIJobs.gov (.GOV, not .com), the official job site for the FBI, they are recruiting for 2,100 “professional and staff positions” plus an additional 850 “special agents.”

Guess their 2009 budget was expanded substantially.  I hope that’s good news, but I’m not sure.  Certainly, it should be good news for job seekers.
