Indiana Jobs Dwindle

December 22nd, 2008 by Joel

Along with the rest of the nation, Indiana jobs are continuing to decline.

During November, Indiana’s unemployment rate increased at a faster pace than the nation as a whole, according to an article by WLKY. The state had an unemployment rate of 7.1 percent, up from 6.4 percent during October and higher than the national unemployment rate of 6.7 percent.

According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indiana had a total non-farm employment of 2,950,600 workers during November. This is a decrease from 2,963,400 workers during October and a 1.6 percent decrease from last year. That means Indiana lost an additional 12,800 jobs during November, many in the automotive industry.

Industries throughout the state that saw an over-the-year employment decrease were:

  • natural resources and mining by 1.4 percent
  • construction by 3.8 percent
  • manufacturing by 5.3 percent
  • trade, transportation and utilities by 2.3 percent
  • information by 1.2 percent
  • professional and business services by 1.3 percent
  • The industries that saw an over-the-year increase in jobs in Indiana were:

  • financial activities by .3 percent
  • education and health services by .6 percent
  • leisure and hospitality by .2 percent
  • government by .6 percent
  • The other services industry employed 112,200 workers during November, up from 112,100 workers during October, but the same as last year.

The nation as a whole lost 533,000 jobs during November, while the unemployment rate increased from 6.5 percent in October to 6.7 percent. The job losses come on the heels of the 320,000 jobs lost during October and the 403,000 jobs lost during September.
