Hot Sites of the Week - Archive

Each week (usually) we post a "Hot Site of the Week" on our homepage. We pick these sites based on our estimation of their quality and high value to our visitors. This section is a compilation of those sites from the present week back through to January 3, 2005. (For a trip down memory lane, see October, 1999, through December, 2002, January, 2003 through December 2004, and January, 2005 through December, 2006. If a week is missing, that week's "hot site" cooled off and disappeared. RIP!)

  • March 31 , 2008: VocationVacation.com
A walk on the lighter side of job hunting - this is a site which offers you the opportunity to try out a job (a.k.a. "vocation") while you're on vacation. And, as with most vacations - you pay them. It's not a job where anyone pays you, unfortunately. But, it's vacation planning season, and this might be fun and useful. [For more sites like this, see Job-Hunt's General section.]

  • March 24, 2008: AmeriCorps
A site where you can find a job, learn some new skills, and help people, too. What could be better? Great for the start of your career, a low point, preparing for a change, or resting on your laurels in quasi-retirement. Pick your interest, with choices ranging from Community Development, through Hurricane Katrina, to Technology. Then, choose your location, and go for it.

  • March 17, 2008: LinkedIn
If you are a professional working in the USA, you should probably have a LinkedIn profile. Currently more than 20,000,000 people do. I know people who've landed new jobs as a consequence of posting their profile here because recruiters do "shop" through their personal networks for people with the skills they need. Jobs are posted here, too. The LinkedIn toolbar lets you know who in your personal network works at the company who's job posting you are viewing, which can be handy. Be careful about being too aggressive in expanding your network and reaching out to potential employers. Also know that people can use LinkedIn to pre-verify your quality as a potential employee. Do read the terms of use to understand what is officially acceptable and what is not.

  • March 10, 2008: One Day, One Job and One Day, One Internship
A very interesting blog. Each day, each site looks at a different employer/opportunity, focusing on entry level jobs and internships, respectively. It walks you through analysis of the employer, information on the employer Website, Wikipedia entries, whatever is relevant. This is a great demonstration of how to put the Internet to use for finding and landing a job. The research is key, and these sites lay it out for you. Enjoy!

  • March 2, 2008: Best Careers of 2008
From US News & World Report, written by the amazing Marty Nemko. If you're planning a career change, check out these options to see if anything is appealing.

  • February 24, 2008: Fortune 100 Best Companies of 2008
If you're in the market for a new employer, this is a great shopping list. Just expect a lot of competition, too. Good luck!

  • February 17, 2008: Fortune Small Business 100
Forune magazine's researchers find more interesting companies than just the Fortune 500. They also look for the fastest growing small companies. These can be great places to work and build a career. They can also be terrible places to work. Some crash and burn, and some become tomorrow's Microsoft or Google. Take a look.

  • February 10, 2008: Idealist.org
Volunteering is a great thing to do. It helps society, and it helps you, particularly if you've been unemployed for a while and feeling useless. Often it is great networking, and Idealist.org lives up to its name offering you all kinds of opportunities, internationally, to help you find exactly what you want to do. You'll probably find more opportunities that you can handle, but that's much better than not enough. This is an excellent site with excellent goals - including forums (for Q & A) and groups, in addition to the volunteer opportunity postings.

  • January 28, 2008: TeamworkOnline
If you've always wanted to work in "sports" this site may help you achieve that ambition. I did a search on "manager," and it listed jobs with the word "manager" in the title for AHL Hockey, Arena Football, the Atlanta Falcons, ATP/WTA Tour, Charlotte Bobcats, DIRT MotorSports, Comcast-Spectacor, etc. Interesting niche!

  • January 21, 2008: BackDoorJobs
They call this site "short term job adventures" and that's what they offer. The categories of available positions: adventure, wilderness, outdoor, environmental, resosrt and hospitality, meaningful work and more, inside the U.S.A. and across the globe.

  • January 7, 2008: AgCareers.com
From the Farm.com people for those who are interested in working in the field :-) of agriculture. Bot outdoor jobs and the usual business-oriented office jobs associated with the big business agriculture can be. We will always need food, so this may be more secure than some other industries.

  • January 1, 2008: Wishcraft.com
This free book in PDF format (also free)! Wishcraft, written by Barbara Sher (with Annie Gottlieb) in 1979, is one of my favorites. Don't be put off by the date. This book provides some help in figuring out what you want to do. It's strength is in helping you reach your goals by guiding you in the implementation of a "success team." Your team members help you reach your goal while you help them reach their goals. When I was laid off in 1994, this book and these ideas helped me found NETability which led to Job-Hunt. (And the rest is history?)
[For more sites like this, see Job-Hunt's Reference Information Resources section.]

  • December 17 & 24, 2007 - SusanIreland.com
I confess, Susan Ireland is a friend of mine. She's also a recognized resume and job hunting guru, published author of several books, and blogger. Her site is a treasure-trove of information for job seekers, including many sample resumes plus concreete advice on handling employment gaps and other resume-writing problems.

  • (oops!) December 10, 2007 - DudeRanchJobs

  • November 5 and 12, 2007 - Personal Branding Telesummit
Recorded presentations (click on the "MP3" links) from a free day-long summit with many excellent speakers, helping spread the word and the expertise about establishing a pesonal brand. Think about how often you Google someone, and you'll recognize how important personal branding is now and may become in the future.

  • October 30, 2007 - Oya's Directory of Recruiters
This is a useful resource with recruiters listed by specialty and/or by location. Just remember that recruiters work for the employers, not for job seekers. So, don't expect them to do your job search for you, although they can be very helpful.

  • October 23, 2007 - FindaFluShot
Nothing can mess up a job search like getting the flu, and FindaFluShot helps you do exactly that.

  • October 15, 2007 - Practical Job Search Advice
Liz Ryan, career columnist for Business Week and Yahoo! HotJobs, mother, opera singer, etc. (clearly an under-achiever) also writes this excellent blog which really is full of practical advice. Having been both a corporate employee and also HR director of a Fortune 100 company, she has insight and advice that is right-on. Enjoy!

  • October 1 & 8, 2007 - AuntMinie
AuntMinnie? AuntMinnie is a portal site for people in the field of medical radiology. The Career Center is not gigantic, but it is effective. The largest portion of jobs are for radiologists (no surprise), but there are also listings for sales jobs, software engineer jobs, marketing jobs, even educator jobs, full-time, part-time, even a few temporary jobs. Plus equipment for sale, conferences, news, etc. There is a privacy policy.

  • September 24, 2007 - Ask the Headhunter
Nick Crocodilos is a head hunter who has his own perspective and opinioins on how the online employment process works. Most of the time, I agree with him completely.

  • September 17, 2007 - JibberJobber Blog
This is Jason Alba's blog, and Jason has an interesting take on what's going on in the job market. He was laid off a couple of years ago and, based on his personal frustrations keeping track of the job search process, he became an entrepreneur with a product/service called JibberJobber. Jason is getting a lot of visibility with his blog, both for himself and his business. Take a look, and see what you can learn.

  • September 11, 2007 - Workforce50
This is the new brand for an old friend, SeniorJobBank.org. This is the only one of the job sites, of all of the sites allegedly for the over 50 crowd, that truly has jobs for people over 50 posted by employers who are actually recruiting people over 50 - unlike a lot of their competitors who just pull job listings from anywhere and everywhere.

  • September 3, 2007 - Veteran's Employment Resources Center
Tools, resources, information, and job opportunities from USAjobs.gov.

  • August 27, 2007: OpportunityKnocks

  • August 13, 2007: Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling
Brush up on this important set of skills so you don't sabotage your job search with grammatical errors in your resume, cover letter, thank you (of course, you write thank you's!), and other follow-up correspondence. Purdue University's OWL (Online Writing Lab) offers a wonderful resource for everyone with this section of their site. This site provides exercises to test your skill and the information to improve your performance where ever you need a little help.

  • August 6, 2007:  AnnualReports.com
All U.S. companies with stock traded publicly (like the NYSE, AMEX, NASDAQ, etc.) are required to publish an audited financial report every year, called an "annual report." Most of them are embellished with lots of additional (quasi-marketing) information and photos. Dazzle them during the interview and avoid being the last person hired before the layoffs begin by doing some basic research into potential employers. In the pre-Internet era, we had to trudge to a university or business library to find this information, but now you can find it here. [For more sites like this, see Job-Hunt's Reference Information Resources section.]

  • July 30, 2007: What Can I Do with a Major in...

  • July 23, 2007: Salary Calculator
From Move.com, will show you an estimate of the median salaries for different jobs in different locations. Many considerations go into determining an appropriate salary, like education, years of experience, as well as the employer's budget and the salaries paid to other employees. [For more sites like this, see Job-Hunt's Reference Information Resources section.]

Free advice from the career experts - another useful blog written by people who know what they're talking about.

  • July 9, 2007: Career Masters Talk
Great advice from the professional career coaches and resume writers who belong to the Career Masters Institute/The Alliance.

  • June 25 and July 2, 2007: Working from Home FAQ
My friend Lisa Shea runs several very prosperous Web-based businesses, and this section of one of her sites is a collection of the wisdom and research she has accumulated over the years. This is not about "get rich quick" or a great business opportunity that Lisa has for sale. It's about the issues to consider and address as you build your home-based business. Good, solid, practical advice from someone who has done it successfully.

  • June 18, 2007: BackdoorJobs
Don't want to be tied to a desk in an office or behind the counter in a store? These are NOT your typical job postings - from tracking wild lions in South Africa to coaching teenagers in rope climbing, this site has unusual jobs, mostly outdoors. One of their categories of jobs is "Short Term Job Adventures" and that seems to be a very accurate description. [For more sites like this, see Job-Hunt's General section.]

  • May 21, 2007: Net-Temps
Net-Temps has both "temp" as well as permanent (as "permanent" as a job is these days) job opportunities PLUS contract opportunities - a job that lasts from a few weeks to several months and can sometimes develop into a permanent position. It's a good way to pay the bills and add experience to your resume at the same time. A Privacy Policy is posted. [For more sites like this, see Job-Hunt's Freelancing, Consulting, Contracting, and Temping section.]

  • May 14, 2007: Work-at-Home Schemes (en español)
From the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, information about classic and current work-at-home scams, often distributed via e-mail.

  • May 7, 2007: Craig'sList
This is the site mentioned most often as the source of a lead that turned into a job. Craig's List is a GIANT online classifeds site, organized by location (city or state). Pick your location from the lists on the right end of the home pages. Be sure to check out the "gigs" (short term jobs) as well as the "jobs," and browse through the "events" in the "community" category for networking opportunities, too. Quality varies by location - see Job-Hunt's Guide to Using Craig's List to Find a Job for tips. [For more sites like this, see Job-Hunt's Employment Super Sites section.]

  • April 30 , 2007: VocationVacation.com
A walk on the lighter side of job hunting - this is a site which offers you the opportunity to try out a job (a.k.a. "vocation") while you're on vacation. And, as with most vacations - you pay them. It's not a job where anyone pays you, unfortunately. But, it's vacation planning season, and this might be fun and useful. [For more sites like this, see Job-Hunt's General section.]

  • April 23 , 2007 - "You've got to find what you love"
Steve Jobs, founder of Apple and Pixar, is an extraordinary entrepreneur, and, apparently also a very wise man. This link is to the text of a speech he gave at the Stanford University commencement in 2005 which I think is very inspiring. Enjoy!

  • April 16, 2007: RefDesk
If there's a fact or some other tidbit of information you want to know (like what day of the week will be April 1 in 2020 or what day it was in 1720), a term in a financial or legal dictionary, a news source, a weather forecast (anywhere in the world), and much MUCH more. Can help you out in a crisis.

  • April 9, 2007: MediaBistro
If you are interested in working in the media (print or broadcast), MediaBistro provides job leads for "real" jobs, leads for freelance writers, advice on pitching various publications, the latest media news, and courses (in person and online). • March 5, 2007: Scams & Schemes
An excellent collection of information which - unfortunately - is needed these days, by Margaret Dikel of the RileyGuide. Margaret covers it all from spotting them, protecting yourself, and filing reports with the appropriate authorities if you have been scammed. As the old sarge on Hill St. Blues said at the start of every show, "Be careful out there." Good advice!

  • February 26, 2007:  PRWeb
A great source of information when researching a company or an industry, even a person. Find out what's been printed or put out as the "party line," the "players," and what is going on. Avoid being like the person who picked a job in a buggy whip company just as the automobile industry was taking off.

  • February 19, 2007:  MIT OpenCourseWare
No, you won't end up with a degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but you'll be able to learn many of the things taught at MIT. If learning is your goal, and for most of us learning is a life-long adventure, then MIT OpenCourseWare is an absolutely amazing gift from one of the world's best universities. From Aeronautics through Women's Studies and Writing - it's all here for you to feast on. Enjoy! Learn! Advance!

  • February 11, 2007:  TeamworkOnline
If you've always wanted to work in "sports" this site may help you achieve that ambition. I did a search on "manager," and it listed jobs with the word "manager" in the title for AHL Hockey, Arena Football, the Atlanta Falcons, ATP/WTA Tour, Charlotte Bobcats, DIRT MotorSports, Comcast-Spectacor, etc. Interesting niche!

Newly updated and full of good advice and links from the man who really does know this subject better than anyone else. Lovely man; classic book; wonderful Website!

  • January 15, 2007: Work Ministry
One of the most important sites of 2006 (see Job-Hunt's Best Job Sites for 2006) Work Ministry helps job seekers connect with local help offline as well as online, and it also has a great job board with jobs across the country.

  • January 8, 2007: Indeed.com
One of the most important sites of 2006 (see Job-Hunt's Best Job Sites for 2006) If you haven't checked out Indeed.com, you should. It's one of the biggest "aggregator" site - visiting job sites and employers to gather job opportunities in one central location. The problem with most aggregators is that the jobs can be old and obscure, which does not seem to be a problem for Indeed.

  • December 27, 2006 & January 1, 2007: Wishcraft.com
This free book in PDF format (also free)! Wishcraft, written by Barbara Sher (with Annie Gottlieb) in 1979, is one of my favorites. Don't be put off by the date. This book provides some help in figuring out what you want to do. It's strength is in helping you reach your goals by guiding you in the implementation of a "success team."
