Classified Ads

Online classified ads are frequently the online version of the genuine off-line newspaper classified ads, and these can be great! They are more easily searched online (by keyword, etc.) than the print version. The only downside maybe the date range, frequently only the current day or current week plus the Sunday listings. However, that means that all of these ads are relatively "fresh." And, they usually include the kind of ads you wouldn't find on a typical Web job site.

These are major online classified ad sites, covering more than one geographic area. For the classified ads in local papers, check Job-Hunt's job resources by state listings which include newspapers local to the state covered.

The Best of the Best Classified Ad Sites:

  • CraigsList - - online classified ads on sterioids - apartments, personals, collectibles, etc. It started in San Francisco, and now covers every state in the U.S., province in Canada, and many countries. Of most interest to job seekers are the BOTH the "jobs" and the "gigs." [Gigs are short-term jobs.] Be careful - in most cities, the ads are free, so you may find many bogus listings. These are unique classified ads that aren't in print anywhere and are not pulled in to any of the "aggregator" sites (like Indeed.com or Oodle.com, below). Craig's List ads are in reverse chronological order - newest first, oldest last, organized by date within category. Don't post your resume here unless you convert it to a cyber-safe version of your resume! See Job-Hunt's Guide to Using CraigsList for more tips.

The Rest of the Best:

  • AbyZNewsLinks - a great international directory of news sources, newspapers and other news media, by country within continent (U.S.A., Canada)
  • AdQuest3D Classifieds - Over 300,000 classified ads from over 1,600 publications in the U.S., searchable by number of miles from a Zip Code or City and State location, by employment "subcategory" (e.g. farm, healthcare, holiday, etc.), and/or by keywords.
  • NewsDirectory.com - a directory of news resources - newspapers, magazines, TV stations, and TV networks by location (international) and by subject (e.g. automotive, business, health, etc.). Also includes directories of city and county governments and colleges. Find your news resource and look for online classifieds and/or jobs with the newspaper or other news source.
  • Oodle.com - an aggregator of classified ads, currently covering over 300 "regions." Browse by category (region/city or type of classified ad) and then by sub-category, or search. Freshness can be a problem for aggregators, so watch for the most current listings and don't expect the categories and sub-categories to be 100% accurate.
