Training and Education

Employees often find employers are looking for moderate-term on-the-job training. Typists, in 19% of cases, have bachelor's degree or higher. After high school, 52% of workers pursued some additional career education. Employees, in 29% of cases, had only a high school education.

Job Overview

Typists use computers or typewriters to prepare reports, letters, mailing labels and other types of materials. While using a computer, they use an array of word processing commands to format material and to instruct the computer to perform various functions. Some typists perform other tasks such as answering telephones and copying documents.

Job Requirements

Most employers hire individuals who have at least a high school diploma. Employers prefer applicants who have all-around clerical skills including the ability to type fast and accurately.

Nature of Work

  • Check completed work for grammar, spelling, punctuation and format
  • Print out documents for presentation or filing
  • File and store completed documents in computers
  • Adjust settings for page layout, format, line spacing and other style requirements

Area Job Conditions

Typists -of-a-feather seem to flock to Hanford (California), Trenton (New Jersey), and Ocean City (New Jersey). They are less likely to be found around Knoxville (Tennessee), Austin (Texas), and Memphis (Tennessee).

Compensation of workers is best in San Jose (California), Bridgeport (Connecticut), and Brockton (Massachusetts), and much worse in Wichita (Kansas), Greensboro (North Carolina), and Lubbock (Texas).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Typists employed part-time are 23% of the total. Workers, in about 9% of cases, work for themselves.

Typists by Metropolitan Area (city and its surroundings)

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
