Schools and Degrees

High school courses in automotive mechanics and driver training are available. Technical and vocational schools offer programs on driver training. Some truck driver training schools provide training courses and offer certificates. These schools are guided by the Professional Truck Driver Institute. They are required to meet the standards of the industry and the guidelines of the Federal Highway Administration.

Training and Education

Employees often obtain moderate-term on-the-job training before starting. The percentage of truck drivers with college degrees is 4%. Workers with some college (less than a bachelor's degree) represent about 25% of the total. Some employees, about 71%, had a high-school education.

Job Overview

Truck drivers can be found carrying out their duties on the nation's interstates and highways. They deliver anything and everything, from canned food to automobiles. Organizations of all kinds depend upon trucks for transporting their goods. Trains, ships and airplanes transport goods, but trucks also contribute substantially to the delivery requirements.

Job Requirements

Regulations made by federal and state authorities guide the requirements for truck drivers. Most truck drivers need to have a clear driving record and a clean criminal background. Truck drivers who carry hazardous materials in their vehicles are checked by the Transportation Security Administration.

Truck drivers need to have a license for the state in which they drive. It should be a commercial driver’s license. In order to obtain the CDL, truck drivers need to pass a written exam that tests their knowledge on the regulations and rules. They also need to pass a practical driving test and have a clean driving record.

In order to drive commercial vehicles, drivers need to be 21 years old, which was decided by the U.S Department of Transportation. It also states that drivers have to pass a physical examination test every two years. In order to pass that, they need to have 20/40 vision with glasses, have a field of vision of 70 degrees in each eye and should not be color blind.

Nature of Work

Truck drivers check the truck and cargo condition before embarking on a journey. They keep an account of the activities and condition of the truck as prescribed by the U.S. DOT. Trucks transport livestock, vehicles and other goods over long distances from one city to another. For very long journeys, many firms keep two drivers so that one can rest while the other drives. Sometimes, truck drivers may even be required to load goods in the truck.

Truck drivers have to drive for long stretches of time and this frequently becomes tiring. The U.S DOT specifies that a long distance truck driver may drive up to 11 hours in a day and, combined with other activities, can work for up to 14 hours per day. A driver who works for 70 hours through 8 consecutive days is required to take a 34-hour break.

Area Job Conditions

Popular locations for truck drivers include Joplin (Missouri), Fayetteville (Arkansas), and Laredo (Texas). Fewer are found in Bethesda (Maryland), Boulder (Colorado), and Santa Fe (New Mexico).

Workers looking for high salaries should look at Fairbanks (Alaska), Trenton (New Jersey), and Nassau (New York), and should avoid Wheeling (West Virginia), Hot Springs (Arkansas), and Warner Robins (Georgia).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Part-time truck drivers are 7% of all surveyed. Some workers, about 9%, work for themselves.

Truck Drivers by Metropolitan Area (city and its surroundings)

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
