Telecom Equipment Installer Training and Jobs
Schools and Degrees
Telecom equipment installers need post-secondary education with electronics and computers. A two to four year college education in communication and electronics technology is important. Several courses that are offered by software and equipment manufacturers also help.
Training and Education
Employees are generally expected to have a postsecondary vocational award. About 13% of telecom equipment installers hold a bachelor's degree or better. Job Overview
Telecom equipment installers install and maintain complicated equipments responsible for telecommunications. They handle electronic and optical switches to route data to their transmitters and receivers to help us communicate electronically.
Job Requirements
Experience is a very valued requirement in this field. Work experience as a telecom line installer is useful to move to more complex jobs like those of central office installer. Training by employers is also important, who may consist of classroom sessions in electronics, software systems and communication systems. As technology advances, training becomes mandatory for telecom equipment installers to remain up to date with the changing trends.
Certifications are required to enhance one's abilities and to advance in the profession. They testify that the candidate is abreast with recent technological changes. Voluntary certifications are offered in this field by the Telecommunications Industry Association and the Society of Cable and Telecommunications Engineers.
Acquaintance with computers and the ability to solve problems are qualities regarded highly by employers. Good interpersonal skills, communication abilities and a pleasant personality are also important for those who need to be in contact with customers.
Nature of Work
Telecom equipment installers who work at switching hubs install the routers, switches and cables. Switchers and routers amplify process and transmit a huge amount of information. Telecom equip operators use their technical skills to maintain such equipments. They also look into problems involving these complex technical systems and help solve them.
Telecom equipment installers usually work in clean environments. They are required to travel to the place where telecom equipments need installing . The installation may need them to climb on top of roofs and telephone poles. They are susceptible to falls, electrical shocks and injuries and one needs to take adequate safety measures to prevent them. They usually have normal work hours.
Area Job Conditions
Telecom equipment installers are relatively common in Taunton (Massachusetts), Eau Claire (Wisconsin), and Lubbock (Texas). They are rarer in Fort Smith (Arkansas), Killeen (Texas), and Sarasota (Florida).
Workers are paid highest in Albany (New York), Binghamton (New York), and New York (New York), and lowest in Wausau (Wisconsin), Oshkosh (Wisconsin), and Fond du Lac (Wisconsin).
