Retail sales clerk supervisors work in retail establishments and make sure customers get reliable products and service. They are also responsible for handling complaints made by customers and for answering their queries. They also need to look into accounting, purchasing and budgeting.

Experience is an essential requirement to become a retail sales clerk supervisor. Most supervisors have prior work experience in retail sales, where they learn about the fundamental policy and guidelines in the company.

Training is also essential for a retail sales clerk supervisor. Many companies have official training programs, which include classroom teaching and practical training. Training for retail franchises cover almost every company functions like budgeting, finance, purchase, compensation management and marketing.

Supervisors need have excellent communication skills and interpersonal relation management abilities. They need to have patience and have to be able to deal with irate and demanding customers. Decisiveness, discipline and good judgment are assets for a retail sales clerk supervisor. They also need to be able to organize, direct and motivate the retail sales clerks with whom they work.


Nature of Work

The size of the company determines the responsibilities of retail sales clerk supervisors. When the retail store is large, they generally focus in either a single aspect of merchandizing or in one department. When responsible for a department, they look after everyday management. They supervise the work of all those under their responsibility and check to make sure goods have proper price tags, shelves are clean and the products are not outdated. They also coordinate with other department heads and take stock of sales and inventory and coordinate promotions for boosting sales. They also assist customers with their purchases.

Retail sales clerk supervisors have offices, but a lot of their time is spent on the floors of their stores. Their offices are generally located within the store itself where they plan out schedules and take note of orders for merchandising. They are supposed to work for forty hours in a week, but often times they need to put in extra hours, especially during seasons of high sales. During the absence of any employee they may even have to come to work on short notice.

Finding retail sales clerk supervisors is easiest in Auburn (Alabama), Jacksonville (North Carolina), and Hot Springs (Arkansas), and by comparison more challenging in New York (New York), Lancaster (Pennsylvania), and Jefferson City (Missouri).

The pay is best in Nassau (New York), Naples (Florida), and San Francisco (California) and worst in Weirton (West Virginia), Pine Bluff (Arkansas), and Morgantown (West Virginia).
