Nurses Aides Training and Jobs

Schools and Degrees

Nurse’s aides need to undergo a formal training program offered be several high schools, vocational-technical centers, nursing care facilities and community colleges. These programs teach body mechanics, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, infection control, communication skills and resident rights. Personal care skills are also taught in these courses. Some employers provide classroom instruction for newly hired aides, while others rely solely on informal on-the-job instruction by a licensed nurse or an experienced aide. Such training may last anywhere from several days to a few months. Nursing aides are also advised to attend lectures, workshops and in-service training.

Training and Education

Employees normally have a postsecondary vocational award before landing a job. Degrees are held by 7% of current nurses aides. Post-secondary schooling was enough for 37% of workers. Education topped out at high school for 55% of employees.

Job Overview

Nurse’s aides take care of physically ill, injured or disabled individuals in hospitals and nursing care facilities. They perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. Nurse’s aides handle several aspects of patient care like helping the patients eat, dress and bathe. They serve meals, make beds and clean rooms. They are also responsible for monitoring a patient’s temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure and respiration rate. Nursing aides also observe patients’ physical, mental and emotional conditions and report any change to the nursing or medical staff.

Job Requirements

The Federal Government requires nursing aides to pass a competency test covering a wide range of topics. The National Association for Home Care and Hospice offers voluntary certification to nursing aides. Some States in the US require nurse’s aides to have a license. They must complete a minimum of 75 hours of state-approved training and pass a competency test in order to earn this certificate. Those who complete the program are placed on the state register of nurse aides. Hospitals usually prefer nursing aides who have prior experience in the field.

Nursing aides should be tactful, understanding, patient, emotionally stable and dependable. They should be able to work together in teams. The job also requires nurse’s aides to have good communication skills and be willing to do repetitive and routine tasks.

Nature of Work

Since nurse’s aides spend long hours with patients, they have to be extremely cautious about following safety procedures against contagious infections and diseases. Their work includes unpleasant tasks such as emptying bedpans and changing soiled bed linens, which may lead to occupational stress. Nurse’s aides might also have to help other medical staff set up equipment, store and move supplies and assist with some treatment procedures.

Area Job Conditions

You'll see a lot of nurses aides in Lewiston (Idaho), Kankakee (Illinois), and Johnstown (Pennsylvania), and comparatively fewer in Las Vegas (Nevada), Raleigh (North Carolina), and El Centro (California).

Wages for Workers are highest in Nassau (New York), San Francisco (California), and New York (New York), and lowest in El Paso (Texas), McAllen (Texas), and Brownsville (Texas).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Part-time work suffices for 24% of nurses aides. Workers working on their own make up 2% of the total.

A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
