Logistician Schools, Salaries, and Job Data

Logisticians Job Overview

Logisticians are responsible for the complete life cycle of a product including acquisition, internal allocation, distribution, delivery of the product and the final disposal of resources. Logisticians sometimes alter the plan for the movement of goods to minimize costs and maximize value. Logistics coordinators work with customers' representatives who are involved with logistics activity.

Logisticians Schools and Degrees

Degrees are available in logistics, transportation and logistics management, industrial engineering, supply chain management and business studies. Master's degrees are also available.

The International Society of Logistics provides the Certified Master Logistician (CML) and the Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) certifications.

Job Requirements

Many employers prefer to hire people that have a degree in logistics, supply chain management, industrial engineering or business studies. Some logisticians have earned graduate degrees.

Nature of Work

  • Oversee availability and allocation of supplies, materials and finished products
  • Plan and oversee support activities such as maintenance planning and repair analysis
  • Oversee the compilation and evaluation of technical data which is used for product development
  • Evaluate logistics performance with customers to compare to targets, benchmarks and service agreements

Logisticians Jobs and Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a much faster than average employment growth from 2008 to 2018 for logisticians.

The major employers of logisticians are shown below:

  • Federal government
  • Management of companies and enterprises
  • Computer systems design and related services
  • Management, scientific and technical consulting services
  • Aerospace products and parts manufacturers

In 2009, the annual average earnings for logisticians was $67,960.

Job Numbers and Growth

There were about 83,000 logisticians across the US in 2008. Unemployment for workers was considered very low in the recent past, relative to other occupations. The percentage of employees unemployed in 2008 was 2%.

Area Job Conditions

The cities with the most logisticians per capita are Warner Robins (Georgia), Huntsville (Alabama), and Battle Creek (Michigan), while the worst cities are Portland (Maine), Fresno (California), and Las Vegas (Nevada).

The highest salaries for workers are in and around Edison (New Jersey), Haverhill (Massachusetts), and Dayton (Ohio). The lowest-paying areas are Chattanooga (Tennessee), Altoona (Pennsylvania), and San Antonio (Texas).

Training and Education

Education or job training for employees typically involves a bachelor's degree. At least 43% of logisticians had a degree of four or more years. About 38% of workers had some college below a bachelor's degree. An estimated 19% of employees had just a high-school diploma. Recommended schools are shown in the column to the right; request information from them to help you decide which if any could help you with this career.

Part-Time Work and Self-Employment

An estimated 4% of logisticians work part-time. An estimated 2% of workers were self-employed.

Logisticians by Metropolitan Area (city and its surroundings)

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
