Training and Education

Education or job training for employees typically involves a postsecondary vocational award. At least 7% of licensed practical nurses had a degree of four or more years. About 72% of workers had some college below a bachelor's degree. An estimated 21% of employees had just a high-school diploma.

Job Overview

Licensed practical nurses care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent or disabled. They work under the directions of physician and registered nurses. They basically provide services like measuring a patient’s height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate. They prepare and give injections and enemas, dress wounds, monitor catheters and give massages. They also assist the patients to need help bathing, dressing, with personal hygiene, walking and eating.

Job Requirements

All States and the District of Columbia require licensed practical nurses to pass a licensing examination, known as the NCLEX-PN, after completing a state-approved practical nursing program. The exam is developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The NCLEX-PN is a computer-based exam and varies in length. The exam covers four major categories: safe and effective care environment, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity and physiological integrity.

Licensed practical nurses should be emotionally stable and caring. They also need to be observant and have good decision-making and communication skills. As part of a health-care team, they must be able to follow orders and work under close supervision.

Nature of Work

Licensed practical nurses have to collect samples for testing, perform routine laboratory tests and record food and fluid intake and output. They clean and monitor medical equipment. They also help physicians and registered nurses perform tests and procedures. They monitor the patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments. They often teach family members how to care for a relative and teach patients about good health habits. Most of them work in general health care areas, but some work in specialized settings such as nursing homes, doctor’s offices or homes.

Area Job Conditions

The cities with the most licensed practical nurses per capita are Abilene (Texas), Lawton (Oklahoma), and Sandusky (Ohio), while the worst cities are Bend (Oregon), Salt Lake City (Utah), and Portland (Oregon).

The highest salaries for workers are in and around San Jose (California), Oakland (California), and San Francisco (California). The lowest-paying areas are Gadsden (Alabama), State College (Pennsylvania), and Joplin (Missouri).

Part-Time and Self Employment

An estimated 18% of licensed practical nurses work part-time. An estimated 2% of workers were self-employed.

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
