Training and Education

Employees often obtain a bachelor's degree before starting. The percentage of insurance salespersons with college degrees is 45%. Workers with some college (less than a bachelor's degree) represent about 36% of the total. Some employees, about 18%, had a high-school education.

Job Overview

Insurance salespersons help people select the ideal insurance policies for protecting their lives, health and property. If a loss occurs they help clients settle their insurance claims. Insurance agents sell one or more types of insurance such as health, life, long-term care disability, and property and casualty. Some insurance salespersons are involved in retirement planning and estate planning.

Independent insurance salespersons represent several insurance companies and help their clients find the insurance company that offers the best rates and coverage. Captive insurance agents work exclusively for one insurance company.

Job Requirements

Many independent agencies and companies prefer candidates who have a college degree, especially applicants that have majored in finance, economics or business. Some companies will hire individuals who only have a high school diploma if they have proven sales ability.

All agents that sell, negotiate or solicit insurance are required to have a state issued license. Licensure requirements vary by state but they usually require individuals to complete some insurance related coursework and pass several exams.

Nature of Work

  • Customize insurance programs to meet the needs of individual customers
  • Explain to clients the features and the advantages and disadvantages of various policies
  • Calculate premiums and establish a payment method
  • Develop reports and maintain records

Area Job Conditions

Popular locations for insurance salespersons include Macon (Georgia), Palm Coast (Florida), and Lakeland (Florida). Fewer are found in Lima (Ohio), Midland (Texas), and Atlantic City (New Jersey).

Workers looking for high salaries should look at Cumberland (Maryland), Ithaca (New York), and San Francisco (California), and should avoid Fayetteville (North Carolina), Hot Springs (Arkansas), and Brunswick (Georgia).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Part-time insurance salespersons are 10% of all surveyed. Some workers, about 26%, work for themselves.

Insurance Salespersons by Metropolitan Area (city and its surroundings)

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
