Training and Education

Workers often obtain moderate-term on-the-job training before starting. The percentage of employees with college degrees is 58%. Human services assistants with some college (less than a bachelor's degree) represent about 26% of the total. Some workers, about 16%, had a high-school education.

Job Overview

Human services assistants help other professionals offer services to people. They work under the guidance of workers in different fields like nursing, psychology, social work and rehabilitative therapy. They work under varying job titles like human service worker, community support worker and gerontology aid, to name a few.

Job Requirements

Associate’s degrees or certificates in human services or gerontology are useful for human services assistants, as they fulfill the requirements of many employers. Degree courses in human services teach students to observe patients, interview applicants, collect and chronicle information, solve problems and apply treatment plans. Many programs give human service specialists hands on experience, which proves to be very valuable. The level of education and experience a person has often determines the amount of responsibility he or she receives.

In order to advance in this profession, formal education is essential. A human service assistant can apply for jobs related to social work, rehabilitation and case management. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in rehabilitation or human services can prove valuable.

To become a human services assistant, one must have a desire to help others, a sense of accountability and time management skills. One should also have very good communication skills and be understanding and patient to help people who are in trouble.

Nature of Work

Human services assistants arrange for and guide group activities. They evaluate the record of the client, make sure that they have taken their medicine and speak with their family. They also extend emotional support and help their clients become a part of community programs. They work with psychiatrists and social workers to help clients learn to live in society functionally.

The conditions in which human services assistants work may vary. Some work in group homes and sheltered workshops, while others work in hospitals, clinics and offices. They may at times have to travel for their work.

Area Job Conditions

Popular locations for employees include Duluth (Minnesota), Greenville (North Carolina), and St. George (Utah). Fewer are found in Dallas (Texas), Nashua (New Hampshire), and Orlando (Florida).

Human services assistants looking for high salaries should look at Bridgeport (Connecticut), Danbury (Connecticut), and Sheboygan (Wisconsin), and should avoid Anniston (Alabama), Sumter (South Carolina), and Weirton (West Virginia).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Part-time human services assistants are 12% of all surveyed.

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
