To become a general office clerk, one generally needs a high school diploma. Post secondary vocational schools, junior and community colleges and high schools have business education programs for training in this vocation.

Job Requirements

Previous office experience is always helpful. Besides this, acquaintance with word processing software and basic computer operating skills are necessary.

A college degree or some form of formal education helps one advance in this career. Work experience and acquisition of specific skills would assist those with the desire to switch over to jobs with better pay and career potential.

Those who can do many different tasks and fulfill the requirements of the different departments in the company are always preferred. One must also have an eye for detail, be adaptable and have good communication skills.

Nature of Work

The job responsibilities of a clerk is dependent on the kind of office that he or she works in. In general, they maintain records of payroll, take inventory and sort out checks. They also perform jobs that are unique to every organization. For a wholesaler, general office clerks may require to file orders got by fax. Experienced general office clerks may also check reports on statistics, take care of financial and other records and make arrangements for travel. They also ready invoices and answer queries on the functions of departments.

General office clerks have usual office schedules. They work for forty hours a week. Usually, they work in the comfortable environment of an office. Many general office clerks work in temporary or part-time positions.
