Training and Education

A bachelor's or higher degree, plus work experience is often necessary for working in the field. About 48% of general managers have earned a degree. Some college, below a 4-year degree, is sufficient for 33% of workers. Employees with only a high school education represent about 20% of all.


Job Overview

General managers plan and oversee the operations of companies and organizations. Many general managers have overall responsibility for a company. General managers also formulate policies. They direct strategic planning functions. They also oversee the cost and revenue aspects of a company.


Job Requirements

The education requirements for general manager positions vary depending on the type of business. Employers usually prefer applicants who have at least a bachelor's degree in business administration or an applicable subject. Some employers prefer candidates who have a master's degree in business administration. Proven success in lower management positions is vital.

Trenton (New Jersey), Bridgeport (Connecticut), and New York (New York) offer the highest pay. Lawton (Oklahoma), Pine Bluff (Arkansas), and Morristown (Tennessee) offer the lowest salaries.


Part-Time and Self Employment
