Engineering Managers Job Overview

Engineering managers use their engineering and management skills to oversee teams of specialists in technical tasks and projects. Some engineering managers oversee the planning and functions of manufacturing and industrial operations. They also prepare and administer budgets.

Engineering Managers Schools and Degrees

Bachelor's, master's and Ph.D degrees are available. The Master of Engineering Management is a technically based degree that is useful for engineering management positions. Applicants for graduate level engineering management degrees are required to have an undergraduate degree with a major in engineering, the sciences, computer science or mathematics.

Job Requirements

For some management positions a bachelor's degree and experience will suffice. Some positions may require a master's degree. Professional and industrial associations, including engineer's societies offer certification programs which validate engineering management knowledge and skills.

  • Direct, evaluate and approve changes in product design
  • Coordinate and oversee projects
  • Plan and oversee the installation, testing, operation, repair and maintenance of equipment and facilities
  • Develop and implement policies, standards and procedures regarding engineering and technical work

Engineering Managers Jobs and Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecast the job growth for engineers to be about as fast as average for all occupations. The job growth of engineering managers may be connected to the job growth of engineers.

Job Numbers and Growth

There were about 187,000 engineering managers across the US in 2008. Unemployment for workers was considered very low in the recent past, relative to other occupations. The percentage of employees unemployed in 2008 was 1%.

Area Job Conditions

The cities with the most employees per capita are Decatur (Illinois), San Jose (California), and Columbus (Indiana), while the worst cities are Des Moines (Iowa), Salem (Oregon), and Cape Coral (Florida).

The highest salaries for engineering managers are in and around San Jose (California), Midland (Texas), and Boulder (Colorado). The lowest-paying areas are Lewiston (Idaho), Jefferson City (Missouri), and Yuma (Arizona).

Training and Education

Education or job training for workers typically involves a bachelor's or higher degree, plus work experience. At least 84% of employees had a degree of four or more years. About 12% of engineering managers had some college below a bachelor's degree. An estimated 4% of workers had just a high-school diploma.
