Emergency Management Specialists Job Overview

Emergency management specialists oversee crisis management activities and disaster response. Emergency management specialists help out with earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, hazardous material spills and other types of disasters. They also make emergency plans and procedures. Emergency management specialists offer disaster preparedness training for natural, technological, and wartime disasters.

Emergency Management Specialists Schools and Degrees

Numerous schools provide programs in relevant topics such as public administration, public safety, the technical or physical sciences and urban planning.

The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) is operated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The EMI Independent Study program consists of self-paced courses developed for people who have emergency management responsibilities and also for the general public.

Job Requirements

Some employers may require emergency management specialists to have a degree in public safety, public administration, the technical or physical sciences, urban planning or a related subject. Also, in some states particular emergency management positions require certification.

Nature of Work

  • Provide operating procedures to be used for disasters or emergencies
  • Apply for federal funding for emergency management related needs
  • Develop instructional materials for the public and make presentations to citizen groups
  • Coordinate disaster response or crisis management activities

Emergency Management Specialists Jobs and Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a much faster than average job growth between 2008 and 2018 for emergency management specialists.

Area Job Conditions

Employees appear most common in Kennewick (Washington), Harrisburg (Pennsylvania), and Jackson (Mississippi), and least common in Santa Ana (California), Denver (Colorado), and Dallas (Texas).

Oakland (California), Denver (Colorado), and Norwich (Connecticut) offer the highest pay. Gulfport (Mississippi), Louisville (Kentucky), and Des Moines (Iowa) offer the lowest salaries.

Training and Education

Work experience in a related occupation is often necessary for working in the field. About 49% of employees have earned a degree. Some college, below a 4-year degree, is sufficient for 33% of emergency management specialists. Workers with only a high school education represent about 18% of all.
