Job Overview

A child receives the first stage of compulsory education in an elementary or primary school. These years are the most formative in a child’s life, and hence the impact of an elementary school teacher can never be undermined. A teacher at the elementary level plays a vital role in the intellectual and social development of a child.

Becoming an elementary school teacher involves earning a bachelor’s degree in teacher education and also obtaining a license. Colleges and universities offer associate’s, bachelor’s master’s and doctoral degrees and certificate programs in teaching. The course includes subjects like art, literature, mathematics, social science, physical science and music. Often, there are professional education courses in psychology of learning, philosophy of education and different teaching methods. All public schools in the US require elementary school teachers to be licensed. A licensure advisory committee or the State Board of Education grants licenses. However, most states in the U.S. now offer alternative licensure routes to those already possessing a college degree. Also, private schools often do not require teachers to be licensed.

In addition, several institutes like Ashford University, Dominican University, Ellis University, Jones International University and Walden University offer online bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in teaching.

Elementary school teachers can also obtain professional certifications from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. To become nationally certified, one needs to prepare a portfolio of classroom experience and pass a written evaluation of teaching knowledge.

In addition to possessing the academic qualifications for becoming an elementary school teacher, one must also have certain basic skills like communication and motivational abilities. The potential to inspire trust and confidence is an added advantage. A teacher must also be sensitive towards differences in social and cultural background of students. Paying attention to individual requirements of the students is particularly necessary for an elementary school teacher. Also, an elementary school teacher needs to be extremely patient in order to be able to instill education and values in a student.

Working conditions for elementary school teachers are mostly comfortable. However, at times one may have to experience stress and frustration while dealing with unruly and disrespectful students. Since teachers are supposed to produce students exhibiting satisfactory performance in every sphere, the factor of accountability often comes in.

According to research conducted in 2007, elementary school teachers held about 1,538,030 jobs in the US. The industries offering the highest levels of employment are:

  • Child Day Care Services
  • Elementary and Secondary Schools
  • Employment Services
  • Local Government (OES designation)
  • Religious Organizations

The mean annual wage for an elementary school teacher is around $50,040. In the next ten years, employment is expected to grow by 12%, especially for those in rural or urban areas and those who specialize in math and science.

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
