Job Overview

Electricians are involved with installing, maintaining and repairing electrical wiring and the variety of components that electricity flows through. Electricians also install and maintain equipment and machines and other items. Electricians develop diagrams for entire electrical systems. They also connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, outlets and other components.


Job Requirements

Most electricians learn via apprenticeship programs which combine classroom instruction with on-the-job training. Apprentices need to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate. Also, most states and localities require electricians to be licensed.


Nature of Work

  • Assemble, install, test and maintain electrical wiring, equipment and other items
  • Plan the layout and installation of electrical wiring and equipment based on job specifications and electrical codes
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment and components
  • Connect wiring to transformers, circuit breakers and other components


Area Job Conditions

Professional electricians -of-a-feather seem to flock to Mount Vernon (Washington), Appleton (Wisconsin), and Lewiston (Idaho). They are less likely to be found around Lawrence (Massachusetts), McAllen (Texas), and Springfield (Ohio).

Compensation of workers is best in Trenton (New Jersey), San Francisco (California), and New York (New York), and much worse in McAllen (Texas), Brownsville (Texas), and Laredo (Texas).


Part-Time and Self Employment

Professional electricians employed part-time are 2% of the total. Workers, in about 11% of cases, work for themselves.
