Development and training is an important field of human resource management. Every organization, whether big or small, wishes to attract the most talented employees. This requirement is fulfilled by the development and training managers. They act as the connection between the employees and the top management. The main job responsibility of the development and training managers is to conduct and supervise the training requirements of the employees in an organization.

The educational requirements for the development and training managers vary considerably on the basis of their levels of responsibility and duties. For the entry level job, employers generally seek college graduates who have a major in human resources administration, human resources, or training and development. There are many colleges and universities which offer programs leading to a degree in human resources, personnel, or labor relations. A large number of certification programs are also available. The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) offers several professional certifications in the field of learning and performance. ASTD also offers more than 15 short-term certificates and workshop programs.

Job Requirements

For the entry-level positions for development and training managers, employers seek only a graduate degree with a major in human resources administration or training and development. The job requirement however may vary according to the type of the organization. Some large organizations may ask for a masters degree in business administration with human resources management as a major.

A more technical and specialized background such as engineering, finance, science, or law may be necessary for some jobs. Previous job experience can be an asset for those aspiring to become development and training managers. Many employers give preference to the entry level candidates who have gained some experience through internships or work-study programs.
