Delivery Vehicle Drivers Job Overview

Delivery vehicle drivers are accountable for the delivery and collection of goods. Their work involves stacking vehicles with goods to be transported and securing the fastening systems. At delivery points they unload and deliver the goods. Delivery vehicle drivers are also responsible for cleaning and refueling their vehicles.


Job Requirements

A driver’s license is required. In order to drive large vehicles, they need a commercial driver’s license. To be able to drive any other vehicle, a regular driver’s license is sufficient.

Federal and state governments set the requirements for truck and delivery vehicle drivers. Delivery vehicle operators delivering hazardous goods have to clear a criminal background check carried out by the Transportation Security Administration. A clear driving record is also required.

A delivery vehicle driver needs to be eighteen years old to be able to drive within the state and twenty-one to drive outside it. They need to be physically fit, have good hearing and eyesight. They need to have a field of vision of 70 degrees and at least 20/40 vision with glasses. They are tested for drug and alcohol abuse at regular intervals.


Nature of Work

Delivery vehicle drivers are responsible for working out the shortest routes to their deliveries. They need to handle notes of delivery and ensure the completion of all the paperwork for every assignment. They are required to adhere to all the regulations related to delivery vehicles. A delivery vehicle driver needs to take care of the maintenance and cleanliness of the vehicle along with carrying out responsibilities assigned by management.

Delivery vehicle drivers are frequently required to put in long hours. Those who travel locally are able to return home in the evenings. Those travelling over long distances usually drive for about eleven hours in a day. They often need to travel during holidays and weekends and even at night. The maximum driving time per day according to regulations is 14 hours. Those who drive for eight days consecutively are required to take 34 hours off.


Job Overview

According to research carried out in 2006, job opportunities for delivery vehicle drivers will increase by eight percent in the next ten years. Employment is highest in the following industries:

  • Other specialty trade contractors

The average median hourly earnings of delivery vehicle drivers can be anywhere between twelve and sixteen dollars, as of 2006.

You'll see a lot of delivery vehicle drivers in Casper (Wyoming), Lebanon (Pennsylvania), and Billings (Montana), and comparatively fewer in Ames (Iowa), Iowa City (Iowa), and Jefferson City (Missouri).

Wages for Workers are highest in Battle Creek (Michigan), Pittsfield (Massachusetts), and Dover (Delaware), and lowest in Lebanon (Pennsylvania), Great Falls (Montana), and Pocatello (Idaho).
