Training and Education

Job Overview

Credit analysts evaluate the ability of companies and individuals to pay back their loans and other types of debts. A credit analyst determines the risk involved in providing business loans and extending lines of credit. Commercial credit analysts work for banks and other types of commercial lenders and for government agencies.


Job Requirements

Most employers require credit analysts to have a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, business or a related financial field.


Nature of Work

  • Develop financial profiles for companies
  • Evaluate customer's records and recommend payment plans
  • Compare credit histories, liquidity and profitability of companies being evaluated with similar companies in the same industries and locations
  • Evaluate a company's income growth, market share, management quality and other items to estimate the expected profitability from the loans


Area Job Conditions

Finding employees is easiest in Phoenix (Arizona), Sioux Falls (South Dakota), and Florence (South Carolina), and by comparison more challenging in Lansing (Michigan), Palm Bay (Florida), and Baton Rouge (Louisiana).

The pay is best in New York (New York), Stockton (California), and San Francisco (California) and worst in Florence (South Carolina), Tuscaloosa (Alabama), and Killeen (Texas).
