Construction Worker Supervisors Job Overview

Construction worker supervisors oversee skilled and unskilled workers at construction sites. They ensure the construction workers efficiently use materials, equipment and their time. A construction worker supervisor assigns tasks to employees. Construction supervisors involved with large projects spend a lot of time with management duties. On small projects a supervisor, known as a working supervisor, works alongside construction workers.

Construction Worker Supervisors Schools and Degrees

Bachelor's degrees are available in construction management, construction science, building science and civil engineering. Some colleges and universities provide a master's degree in construction management or construction science. Many two-year colleges offer construction management or construction technology programs.

Job Requirements

Construction supervisors need to have extensive knowledge of construction. Employers usually prefer those who have skills and experience in construction trades and also have leadership ability. A lot of construction supervisors don't have a college degree, however an increasing number of employers prefer candidates who have some college training.

  • Advise construction workers regarding how to perform specific tasks
  • Report on costs, personnel and safety
  • Make sure safety rules are adhered to by construction workers
  • Keep records of the materials used for a construction project

The employment growth for construction worker supervisors between 2008 and 2018 is projected to be faster than average for all occupations.

Area Job Conditions

Where are jobs most numerous? Grand Junction (Colorado), Farmington (New Mexico), and Greeley (Colorado). Least common? Dalton (Georgia), Lima (Ohio), and Bay City (Michigan).

Salaries vary across the country, from highest in San Francisco (California), Anchorage (Alaska), and Oakland (California) to lowest in Hot Springs (Arkansas), McAllen (Texas), and Brownsville (Texas).

Training and Education

Obtaining work experience in a related occupation will help job seekers. Construction worker supervisors with four or more years of college are 10% of the total.
