Training and Education

Successful employees find it useful to have a bachelor's degree. According to recent surveys, 87% of civil engineers had received a degree. Workers with some schooling beyond high school, but not a college degree, total about 10%. A high school degree was all that was needed for 3% of employees.

Job Overview

Civil engineers plan, design and oversee the construction of bridges, highways, water treatment systems and other types of structures. Some civil engineers participate in community planning and urban renewal. Most civil engineers have a specialty. Some of the major specializations are construction, sanitary, structural, soil mechanics, hydraulics, transportation and environmental.

Job Requirements

A bachelor's degree in civil engineering is typically required. A graduate degree is usually required for individuals who want a career in research, development or teaching. Every state requires licensure for engineers who offer their services directly to the public.

Nature of Work

  • Provide technical advice regarding design, construction, program modifications or structural repairs to managers and industrial personnel
  • Consider the construction costs and expected lifetime of a project
  • Estimate quantities and cost of materials, and labor and equipment to determine the feasibility of a project
  • Evaluate drawings, maps, survey reports, aerial photography and other geological or topographical data in order to make plans for projects

Area Job Conditions

Looking at civil engineers per capita, Kennewick (Washington), Carson City (Nevada), and College Station (Texas) rise to the top of the list. Hickory (North Carolina), Erie (Pennsylvania), and McAllen (Texas) have the fewest per capita.

The highest salaries for workers are in and around Baton Rouge (Louisiana), San Jose (California), and Houston (Texas). The lowest-paying areas are Athens (Georgia), Elkhart (Indiana), and Lubbock (Texas).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Civil engineers working less than full time, whether by design or chance, were 3% of the total. If you have this occupation and work on your own rather than for another company, you are part of the 5% of workers who do so.

Civil Engineers by Metropolitan Area (city and its surroundings)

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
