Training and Education

Employees often find employers are looking for short-term on-the-job training. Child caregivers, in 15% of cases, have bachelor's degree or higher. After high school, 38% of workers pursued some additional career education. Employees, in 48% of cases, had only a high school education.

Job Overview

Child caregivers teach and take care of children who have not entered kindergarten. They also oversee older children before and after school. Under the supervision of a director, child care workers attend to the health, safety and nutritional needs of infants and children. Child care aides help to develop a child's speech, curiosity, self-esteem, social abilities and physical skills with experimentation, play activities and by answering questions.

Job Requirements

Typically, child caregivers that have less than a high school diploma can obtain some type of child care work. Some employers prefer to hire those who have completed secondary or postsecondary child development and early childhood education classes. An increasing number of employers are seeking applicants who have an associate degree in early childhood education. Some employers seek applicants who have obtained a nationally recognized Child Development Associate credential or the Child Care Professional designation.

Nature of Work

  • Make sure children are properly behaving
  • Arrange for play activities
  • Ensure that school age children complete their homework
  • Ensure children are safe

Area Job Conditions

Child caregivers -of-a-feather seem to flock to Pittsfield (Massachusetts), Iowa City (Iowa), and Hinesville (Georgia). They are less likely to be found around Odessa (Texas), Las Vegas (Nevada), and Dalton (Georgia).

Compensation of workers is best in Santa Fe (New Mexico), Fairbanks (Alaska), and San Francisco (California), and much worse in Valdosta (Georgia), Hinesville (Georgia), and Alexandria (Louisiana).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Child caregivers employed part-time are 34% of the total. Workers, in about 34% of cases, work for themselves.

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
