Child and Family Social Worker Training and Jobs

Schools and Degrees

For those hoping to become a social worker, a peer counselor position at school or voluntarily work at an elderly home would be a good start. Taking up psychology or sociology to learn about human development and emotions is also helpful. A bachelor’s degree in social work is the most usual way to qualify as a social worker, but advanced degrees have become the standard for many positions. A master’s degree in social work is necessary for positions in health settings and clinical work. College and university teaching positions and most research appointments normally require a doctorate in social work. The Council on Social Work Education accredited more than 400 bachelors programs and over 100 masters programs in 2006. The Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education lists around 70 doctoral programs in social work in the United States.

Training and Education

Employees often find employers are looking for a bachelor's degree. Child and family social workers, in 77% of cases, have bachelor's degree or higher. After high school, 16% of workers pursued some additional career education. Employees, in 7% of cases, had only a high school education.

Job Overview

Child and family social workers help children and families handle social and psychological problems. They attempt to improve the family's well-being by assessing and monitoring the family's problems regarding women and children, and providing advice regarding family planning methods, adult education, health care and education. They also assist single parents and arrange adoptions or find foster homes for neglected, abandoned or abused children.

Job Requirements

A child and family social worker should take a proactive approach to help with his/her clients and provide the services that their clients need. In addition, child and family social workers should be able to counsel people with various backgrounds and problems, refer them to services and programs, keep records and complete the necessary paperwork.

Nature of Work

Child and family social workers often work in offices talking with clients, making phone calls and doing paperwork. They are also required to travel in order to visit clients at distant locations and attend meetings. Though the work is very satisfying, it can be challenging as well, as understaffing and large caseloads lead to added pressure. Full-time workers generally work an average 40-hour week, but some occasionally work evenings and weekends to meet with clients, attend community meetings and handle emergencies. Some of them also work part time, particularly in voluntary non-profit agencies.

Area Job Conditions

Child and family social workers -of-a-feather seem to flock to Johnstown (Pennsylvania), Morgantown (West Virginia), and Las Cruces (New Mexico). They are less likely to be found around Santa Ana (California), Orlando (Florida), and Bakersfield (California).

Compensation of workers is best in Waterbury (Connecticut), Norwich (Connecticut), and Hartford (Connecticut), and much worse in State College (Pennsylvania), Santa Fe (New Mexico), and Corvallis (Oregon).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Child and family social workers employed part-time are 9% of the total. Workers, in about 3% of cases, work for themselves.

Child and Family Social Workers by Metropolitan Area (city and its surroundings)

In the table below, a Job Density near 0% means the area has an average number of people in this occupation, for its population. A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
