Animal Caregiver Training and Jobs

Schools and Degrees

Those interested in training animals require a high school diploma. Bachelors' and vocational degrees such as Veterinary Technician or Animal Health Technician are required when working in specialized areas like marine mammal training. Vocational degrees are also required for people who wish to work as caretakers in zoos. Prospective animal caregivers interested in finding employment as groomers may opt for programs offered by state licensed animal grooming schools.

Organizations like the National Animal Control Association, the Humane Society of the United States, and the American Humane Association organize workshops and training programs that professionals may find beneficial. The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters and the Pet Care Services Association offer home study programs that enable professionals to obtain certification after passing written examinations.

Training and Education

Employees normally have short-term on-the-job training before landing a job. Degrees are held by 16% of current animal caregivers. Post-secondary schooling was enough for 37% of workers. Education topped out at high school for 47% of employees.

Job Overview

Animal caregivers are responsible for feeding, training, grooming, and exercising animals as well as cleaning and disinfecting the animal's enclosure and exercise areas.

Job Requirements

Animal caretakers should be patient, sensitive, and tactful. While it goes without saying that they should enjoy being with animals, they should also be able to deal with emotional people because their work may involve interacting with pet owners facing difficult continued care or termination of care decisions. Certain caregiving environments may require additional specific skills. For example, marine mammal trainers should be strong swimmers themselves.

Nature of Work

People who take care of animals perform a vast range of duties. For example, kennel attendants look after pets when their owners are away or unable to do so. Groomers help owners to keep their pets clean and attractively groomed. Pet groomers operate from either their own salons or in the homes of the pet-owners. Large animal groomers are responsible for horses and perform duties like saddling and unsaddling them, walking them for exercise or cooling, feeding and and cleaning their tack and stall. Professionals who specialize in animal training teach animals to behave in certain specific ways and to obey commands. Many people have seen the television show "The Dog Whisperer" or the film "The Horse Whisperer" in which obedience training is demonstrated. The process of behavior modification requires patience and may take years to achieve the complete result. Animal training professionals enable the animals to display their talent in working and showing environments. Zoo keepers work with a large range and number of animals in their care. They observe and keep a record of the eating and behavioral patterns of many animals, and watch closely for signs of disease, abnormal behavior and distress.

People who like animals enjoy working with them, however they must be aware that any animal may present a hazardous situation at any time, and they risk being bitten or scratched if not vigilant. In some cases, the work can be emotionally demanding because they may have to deal with hopelessly injured animals. They may also have to work outdoors in unpleasant weather conditions if required.

Area Job Conditions

You'll see a lot of animal caregivers in Ocala (Florida), Lexington (Kentucky), and Ames (Iowa), and comparatively fewer in Kingsport (Tennessee), Beaumont (Texas), and Corpus Christi (Texas).

Wages for Workers are highest in Honolulu (Hawaii), Iowa City (Iowa), and Naples (Florida), and lowest in Athens (Georgia), Beaumont (Texas), and Kokomo (Indiana).

Part-Time and Self Employment

Part-time work suffices for 35% of animal caregivers. Workers working on their own make up 26% of the total.

A higher or lower Job Density (e.g., +22% or -45%) tells you there are that many more or fewer workers of that type there than in the average US metro area. So, the higher the number, the more common the occupation.
